In 2009 Elizabeth Strout’s  Olive Kitteridge  A Novel in Stories  won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and has become an American classic.  There have been other Olive Kitteridge novels since – but how has the author so enthralled her readers?  Is it by drawing on a long tradition of American small town stories?  Or something else entirely?  And anyway, what is a modern classic?
