Today focuses on the beautifully crafted silken dragon robes worn by the ‘son of heaven’ (the Chinese emperor) and the imperial family.  We explore the formal and informal costumes of the Chinese imperial court and discover the dragon and other imperial symbols and colour codes worn by Ming and Qing dynasty rulers.   We learn some of the complex language of Chinese dress through courtly accessories – necklaces, hats, belts and shoes – which indicated position in the court hierarchy.
