The early modern period of philosophy is one of the most important and influential periods of thought in Western history. Spanning from the 1600s all the way through the enlightenment and up to the 1800s, many of the philosophical and political ideas that we consider to be cornerstones of our society were first formulated in this period. In this class, we will review some of the key figures and discussions that took place during this time and explore how these discussions continue to have an impact on modern society. Students can expect to cover such thinkers as Descartes, Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Immanuel Kant, and others. This class is suitable for both beginners and improvers.
