Using a variety of sources, including both political writers, and writers of fiction. we will consider the massive social changes that were taking place during this period in Britain;  concentrating on how different writers & commentators made very differing observations on what was happening.

These main themes will include: How the British used enlightenment language, and responded to the ideas emerging from the French Revolution; industrialisation and poverty; the need for reform, and the new language of socialist hope.

So – Thomas Paine, Mary Wollstonecraft, Robert Owen, William Cobbett, Mrs Gaskell, George Eliot & William Morris ….. they’ll all be in there somewhere.
