Unfortunately we have had to cancel this course as numbers enrolled were insufficient.

We hope to offer this course again in the Autumn, and apologise to those who had signed up and were looking forward to attending this course.

In the mind’s eye, the UK is an ancient country built on images of ‘Jerusalem’ and Magna Carta and the mother of all Parliaments. In reality, its boundaries and citizenship have shifted endlessly even over the last century as the combination of loss of Empire, industrial decline, devolution, immigration, globalisation and EU membership/Brexit have fundamentally changed who we are and how we see ourselves. Some have benefited from these tumultuous changes and others have lost out badly. We will take a look at how different groups of people have fared in the UK and why, focusing particularly on questions of ownership, identity and belonging. Our ultimate purpose, in a country that most would agree is currently badly divided, is to seek ideas and values upon which we can all agree and build a new and inclusive sense of ‘patriotism’.
