In the hundred years since it’s first publication,James Joyce’s Ulysses(1922) has been referred to by critics and readers as obscene,difficult and the greatest novel ever written.

This ten week course will move slowly through  the novel,paying attention both to its local techniques and associations as well as it’s broader themes  and questions. By reading this difficult work of modernist literary  experiment carefully  and gradually,students will develop their close- reading skills  as well as their knowledge of literary modernism ,and they will finish the course with  a fuller understanding of this  most life -affirming novel.
